Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead Juicing Diet

I decided to try the juicing diet from the Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead film. (Learn More)

The idea from the film is that over the course of our lives we eat so much unhealthy stuff, junk food, poisons, pesticides, etc. that our bodies are actually damaged. So the star of the film goes on a quest to eat only organically grown vegetable and fruit juice concoctions to cleanse his system and lose the weight that he had gained over the years.

You should consult a doctor of physician before trying this or any diet.

For this diet I used the same juicer in the film, the Breville BJE510XL Ikon 900-Watt Variable-Speed Juice Extractor. At the time of writing this intro I’ve only used it a few times but it works perfectly. It also shreds and separates the pulp into a separate bin which I take outside to feed to my chickens, or put in my worm bins, providing both with healthy, organic produce. (Read more about growing your own organic chicken feed and how to use composting worm bins)

I started the diet today, July 31st, with the intent on stopping August 14th. Giving me a two week cleanse and to see how much weight I can shed. A few sample drinks I’ll be drinking:

Juiced:
1 Juice:

1/2 bunch of kale
1/4 lemon
thumb-nail sized ginger piece
1/2 cucumber
1 apple

1 Juice:
4 Celery pieces
2 Tomatoes
4 Peppers
1 Cucumber
1 handful of parsley

1 Juice:
2 Kiwi (skinned)
10 Strawberries
15 Rasberries
1/2 Mango
2 Apples

1 Juice:
2 Apples
1/3 Pineapple
1 Kiwi
1 Lemon

At the time of posting this it’s the evening of the 3rd day (August 2nd). I’ve lost about 10 LBS, feel very good, and my chickens and compost pile are LOVING the extras. I’ll post a follow-up at the completion of the diet!

JUST DO IT!!! No excuses, no delays! No whining! Ask yourself? Are you overweight? Are you always the chubby on in the crowd? Do you have health issues? Then it is simple – JUST DO IT!!! It doesn’t matter how many oz or how many glasses or the size of the glass etc etc. Just drink until you are not hungry and throw out all the junk food in the house and stay away from what triggers your weaknesses.

  2. Wendy says:

Starting the plan today for the second time. I was so happy
to have lost the weight that I didn’t follow through after the 28 days I stayed in the plan.
Several things I will do differently. I can’t seem to digest the beets. And I love them.
I need to get my head around the plan after my weight loss.
My starting weight was 192. 28 days later I weighed 160.
I lost my gallbladder about two weeks after the diet….
Today …..I am trying it again

  3. Deb Uldrich says:

How do you get the needed proteins if you are only eating fruits and veggies?

  4. barbara says:

If you don’t do enemas after the 3rd day on your juice fast everything that is being cleaned will be absorbed by the body again…….

  5. Mary Linda Mannisto Mcmahon says:

I started my juicing today , Will let you know how I am doing .So far I love the taste of the mean green and hot water with lemon and ginger.have tried a red juice and drinking plenty of water.

  6. Lucy says:

Will a Vitamix work with this plan?

  7. Marie says:

    Hi .
I just started juicing 3 days ago. I have lost 2 pounds already.
    I’m 68,yrs
    5 ft, 0 in.
    151 lbs.
I love veggies but I’m not a big drinker of liquids but can become one.
How much juice ( Mean GREEN drink ) do I have to drink per day to see some results?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  8. Karen walsh says:

Hi, My daughter and I are on the 1st day of the diet after my sister doing the diet last week and losing 9lb and feeling so clean inside.I found it hard this morning not being able to have my cup of coffee! I squeezed fresh lemon juice into hot water and that did help.

  9. merry says:

What could I be doing wrong? I’ve been juicing for 8 days and weighed myself for the first time since I started. I have lost only 3 pounds. This is discouraging. Do you have any ideas?

  10. Laura says:

Hi dono! Looking forward to trying this new diet. Just a question do you juice all day long? Like breakfast lunch and dinner or can you do something more like breakfast and lunch and then a healthy normal dinner? Or does that defeat the purpose?

    Thanks!

  11. Janine says:

    Started diet 4.1.13

    Age:46′
    Weight: 326.6
    Height: 5’8

For the past three days have drank only the mean green juice 22 oz per day. Lost 16.6 lbs. I will increase my juice per day to 60oz. The question I have is can you eat vegtables on this diet. I noticed in the movie the 430lb guy was able to eat fruits ….

    Thanks

  12. Paria says:

    Hey Dono,

I’m glad the diet worked for you, I would love to do it one day, but I go to work everyday so probably should wait for a while before I get a 2 or 3 week holiday.
Do you mind me asking how much you weighed when you started the diet?

  13. shelly says:

Me and my fiance just started yesturday. We both need to loose weight and eat healthier. He has hypertension, terrible headaches, and some other issues. I need to try and get rid of my migranes along with a few other things… My class watch This video and I had to try it. Like a test Run to see if it may work for my brother, father, and mother. Watching that film almost had me in. Tears thinking of my family and there health issues. I definately want to live and all of them also. I hope this works… I don’t know if this site is still used but if so, could someone please let me know of any other recipes or which juice if any worked better for loosing weight… my fiance still Eats regular meals (sometimes huge) will he be able to stop and just do the juice? Just curious. He confessed to sneaking food yesturday lol so I just let him do some of both and excercise lol hoping he’ll come around… thanks again

    • Dono says:

It can be really tough to stick to the diet. Doing it with a partner or friend really helps. Good luck to you both.

  14. samantha says:

hi there,i was wondering what is the ratio of vegi juice to fruit juice per day. im aiming to have only 3-4 juices a day. so should it be 3 vegi juice one fruit juice?

  15. myniece78 says:

Hello everyone. Today is Day 1 of my juice journey and I feel good. No headaches and not very tired. I would like to know what exercises can I do while juicing??

    • Dono says:

Well of course you should see a Dr. before starting any new diet or regiment; however for me juicing didn’t mean I could’t do any normal physical activity.

  16. Irene Batista says:

Good luck…. i am trying it today. Its gona be hard, but iam willing to try. I am 175 pounds and 5’3. Overweight tired, sick, mucusey, allergies are bad, and lactose. I know i will feel better. I will check in after 15 days. You are inspiring.

  17. Rose says:

I Am on Day 5 of this diet and doing GREAT !

    I FEEL SO GOOD !

    I am a 58 year old Female.
    5’5″ and weigh 250 pounds.
I would like to lose 100 to 115 pounds.
I am drinking a double dose of Recipe #1 at each meal.

    6 Kale Leaves
    2 Granny Smith Apples
    4 Large Celery Stalks
    1 Cucumber
    1/2 Lemon
A 1 inch piece of Ginger Root

I LOVE the way it makes me feel. MY BODY DOES NOT HURT !
The first night, I had a headache. I think it was Caffiene Withdrawal
Then the 3rd night I had Charley Horse in my Calves.
Yesterday I was just a bit hungry but a drink of water took care of that.

    Otherwise ALL IS WELL!
I plan to weigh after being on for 1 week………..
    Wish me Luck!

    • Dono says:

Oh please share more of the recipes you find! I’d love to hear them! :)

      • Danniele says:

I REALLY want to do this diet but I just want to clear something up the receipe is that for the one day or do u make that 4 times a day?

      • Janis adkins says:

        My favorite juice mix.
these amounts vary depending on what I have. Just make it work if you do not have much $$. Trust $$ will be there for you

1/2 bunch kale (i like the dark kind more nutr.)
        3-5 carrots or more
1-2 beets medium size or one large (yum)
        1- apple any type
        1 orange

opt’s — spice it up with ginger I also would drink this at least 5 times a day. I also would mix up the juice recipes. Just like any other menu, things get old. Beets are really sweet so they go with anything. Also gives you lots of oxygen to the body. Cilantro is a very good detoxifies. Gets heavy metals out of the body big time. Have fun smelling the roses

        • Tim says:

would a nutribullet work as well with this plan . its more of a blender so no waste.

          • Dono says:

well it would defeat some of the purpose of the fasting portion – in addition to having such a WIDE variety of nutrients with every meal. That’s the point of juicing you get more veggies than you can normally eat.

    • Wendy says:

      Hi Rose,
I have just started the diet today, how is it working for you.

  18. sandy barram says:

i need help, can you tell me how much to drink each meal, as i cant find it on the internet,

    • Dono says:

Hey Sandy, for me, I just used one tall glass and drank until I was full.

    • Janis adkins says:

I would do at least 6 or more 16 oz servings. I do not think that you can over do this. 6 glasses is a LOT of juice, think of it in how many carrots that is for me 6 would = 18 to 20 carrots about 6 bunches of kale. That is a lot of food. After a while you will not needs as much then also start drinking lots of water in between. As they say do see a doctor. A healthy doctor.
good luck, do not over think this. just start even if you just do several glasses a day and get off ALL junk and processed foods. Put Kale in every dinner you’ve got

  19. Im Fat,Sick and nearly dead. Im 57 years old recently had heart attack and stroke in June of 2012. I want to change my life. I want to live. STARTING JUICING DEC 1ST 2012.

    • Dono says:

      How did it go Alicia?

    • Rose says:

Alicia, I would like to know how you are doing..
I am 58 year old woman who has suffered the last 3 years with uricerial vasculitis.
I fell fat, sick and nearly dead.

I WANT TO LIVE and Live Healthy.

I am on day 5 and doing well.
Haven’t seen my Dr. yet though

      • Dono says:

You should see a doctor before you begin any radical diet.

That said, I’m happy that you want to live a good life. :)

  20. I used juicing – plus detoxing and immune building – to stay alive in ’94-’95 and continue to work on health issues. I’ve returned to juicing with this moving and my husband and two of my children are also. Yes, it’s hard work, but also very empowering that we can impact out health so significantly! I get hungry and cranky, but I have more energy, I’m dropping weight, the goiters – thyroid tumors that I have on both sides of my thyroid/neck – seem to be shrinking – I have lots more testimonials about juicing, but I’m glad that people are trying this positive approach!

  21. Edith says:

Hi I also want to do it are the juices listed the ones you drank for all the ten days?

  22. Jennifer says:

Hi, I’m wondering if you ever did it again in September? I am considering this as a big possibility to detox and lose weight. I’d love to have your input, and maybe other recipes you have if possible!

    -Jenn

  23. tyler owen says:

Hello. Few questions. When doing this diet what is the desired amount of juice to drink each day? 3 Juices a day? thanks and congrats on the achievements!

  24. YaYa says:

I commend all of you for going on the Fat, Sick and dying juice fast. I am not fat, I weigh 138 lbs but I am sick with insulin dependent Type one Diabetes and Graves (hyperthyroidism). I workout quite a bit and eat primarily organic veggies and fish once in awhile. I really want to get off of insulin and meds and cure some of the autoimmune issues that I have and just feel better so I thought this diet would be good for me. But I am concerned about the cost of this fast. I did it once for 4 days and it cost me a lot of money. I am on a tight budget and there’s no way I have the money to fast for 60 days or even 30 days. I’m thinking that I’ll try 3 for now and see how it goes. It sounds like a great diet but not for those who don’t have a lot of money. I wish there was an alternative. Any suggestions would greatly appreciated.

  25. Norma Soler says:

Is there a plan to follow as to when and how often to drink a “drink” and how much?

  26. kelley gulley says:

My husband and I did a juice fast for two weeks. I lost 17 lbs and my husband lost 10. I felt better than I had in years. HOWEVER after we started eating again our old bad habits got the better of us and we have put back all the weight. We are ready to try again and hopefully have more willpower to continue eating right after the fast.

    • Dono says:

It’s really about making smart choices and changing your lifestyle.
Make a habit of going to the farmers markets on weekends. Make a habit of spending time in your own garden or yard. See where your food comes from, cut out fast food entirely, and try to eat less processed foods – a quick juice diet will just keep you healthy for as long as you’re on it. Changing your life style and eating more of what god gives us will keep you healthy your whole life.

  27. Lisa says:

Hello I am starting my juice diet today inspired by the fat sick and nearly dead documentary – I appreciate you sharing these recipes – Is there a certain amount of juices to drink per day ?

  28. Teisha says:

Hi there! i was just wondering, how often a day do we have to drink it.? Like breakfast lunch and dinner or.? Im so confused and dont want to start unless i know. :)
    THANKSSSS

  29. Acnaib says:

    Hi Dono and John,
What juice above did you guys stick with to loose all that weight? do you have it for breaky, lunch & tea? don’t you get hungry at all??? Does it even taste nice? and can you buy these items in your local supermarket?

    Thanks

    • Dono says:

      Hey there,

lost about 15 lbs on the diet. Juicing 4-5 times per day. Everyone was sourced locally at supermarkets in the organic section or farmers markets if you can.

  30. Anna says:

    I saw the movie today.
Am really looking forward to trying this cleansing
    fast :)
    i will be starting today.
    Ill post updates
so far im thinking to only try it for two weeks but ill see
How things will turn out within sometime

  31. Kate says:

Would love for you to develop this site more! All topics I am interested in learning more about.

  32. TJ says:

im beginning this diet tomorrow , these items are on the grocery list tonight. i am excited! do you have any other combos i can try?

  33. katie says:

I was Wondering How it went a second time a year later??

  34. Meagan says:

That’s great! Thanks for the info. How many times a day did you have a juice?

  35. Rachel says:

First of all, thank you for posting this. I tried looking up the recipes on the Reboot website, but I couldn’t find any easily. My boyfriend and I are looking to start a fast soon, and I had a few questions for you:

Does it matter what kind of apple you used for the recipes?
What kind of pepper did you use?
Do all the recipes have the same effect (but different tastes, obviously)?
Finally, how did round #2 go?

Thanks again for posting these recipes. They are very helpful!

    • Dono says:

You can use a variety of apples, try something that tastes sweet and is juicy and isn’t too expensive.
Peppers I used everything from bright red bell peppers to some local garden varieties.
Any recipe with fresh organic vegetables should have the desired effect. Really what the goal is is to get fresh organic fruits and vegetables into your system.

  36. Kearlee says:

My friend and I are currently watching Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead in our Nutrition class and are interested in trying the juice diet for a week to see how our bodies react to it. If the results are good we want to ease family members into the diet for health benefits.

  37. devin shea says:

I really wnt to thank you for your honesty & trying this diet. I am VERY interested in changing to this new way of life. I saw the movie. I was very impressed with what Joe did, but more impressed with the 1 man who went on the 60 day plan and lost more than Joe. Are you going the full 60 days, like in the movie? I want to. I just need the different juice concoctions. I am getting permission from my primary care dr. Could you please share with me how you are doing and how I can get this new lifestyle started. I have type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high blood pressure. I really need to lose about 80 pounds. I humbly await your response.
    Devin

  38. Sara Alaniz says:

    First off…CONGRATS!

I just finished watching the movie and I would love to try the fast for 2 weeks. How often did you drink the juice? 3X’s a day or 6X’s a day? Also when did you feel you overcame the headaches?

    Thanks!

    Sara

  39. Tiffany says:

hi I am about to try the juice diet and was wondering are there specific fruits and vegetables that you need to use for the juice or can you pretty much use any type of fruits and vegies? Are there certain combinations that work better for weight loss than others?

  40. Nicole says:

I am on my 2nd day of detox and I am struggling bad. I can not stay full and am already missing solid foods. I cant hardly stand the taste of ginger and/or lemon. Is there any other recipes that I could try? I really want to do this and I also would love to lose some weight seeing I am getting married in April 2012.

  41. Karanveer Singh says:

Thanks for the posts… how did you go in the end? and did the weight stay off?
I’m thinking of giving it a try.

  42. tammy robinson says:

    hello,

i now am ready to move on and go for this juice cleanse!!! thank you!!!!

  43. karin says:

So how did stage 2 go? Im currently staring down the barrel of a

I have tried hundreds over 50 years nothing worked except weight watchers but I was younger then .I was diagnosed pre diabetic three weeks ago which I say no to drugs having none since I was 45 owing to drugs doctor gave me and ended up in hopital.I have also been diagnosed with a under active thyroidCheers Beverly

  46. shyann says:

So is this a safe diet, well of course it would be with all that fruit and veggies, but still i would like to try it, i would say im a very unhealthy teenager who needs a better lifestyle and i like this idea, it sound safe but i see people say to see a doctor before doing this, well wish me luck and thanks for the info… :p

    • Dono says:

Good luck, and yes I’m no doctor – just posting about some things that worked for me. So try seek professionals before starting any big life style change.

  47. Chris says:

I’m getting ready to try this after thanksgiving, how many times a day are you drinking the juice, and how many ounces at a time?

    • Dono says:

Not sure on the amount of ounces, it was basically 1 tall glass full per “meal”. I just Drank until I was full, you can’t overdose on good food and nutrition.

  48. Carol says:

Where do I get the movie?

  49. Cherry says:

Are the 5 juices you listed your meal for the whole day? I want to try it out. Are results worth while? have you started eating solid foods? Feedback is greatly appreciated!

  50. Dono says:

    Hey John, thanks for writing.

No it’s hard, very very hard, but well worth it. I ended up dropping about 17 pounds in 10 days, which was close to the 20 lbs I wanted to drop. I had to take an unexpected trip so went off it. I’ll be doing round #2 in September – very happy with the results so far.

    • Stoutto says:

Was there an issue with lack of energy with my job I cannot afford to get weak.

    • Elizabeth says:

I am curious if you ever did round #2 and how it worked out for you. I am starting a new workout regiment and though this might be nice to do for 2 weeks (knock a little more weight off) before starting with a personal trainer. Also, any suggestions where to find some of these juice recipes, besides the ones you posted. Thank you for posting and sharing!

    • damris says:

did you drink this 4 drinks in 1 day or how many did you drink to loose those 17 pounds in 10 days? did you also exercise?

    • jim says:

i just started the juice diet today is there some other juices for the mourning that anyone can share i cant see myself choking down veggie juice every mourning

  51. John says:

So..how did the diet go for you?

I am on day 3 and I have lost a few pounds but completely gone off coffee. Wicked headache at first but none now. Detoxing is not all that fun.
